Why rattan bends before it breaks

Rattan is a climbing palm, not a timber. Its long fibers let a prepared strand flex and return to shape, which is why it can travel around a corner without snapping.

That flexibility still depends on moisture, grain direction, and consistent tension. A good first rule is to prepare more material than the pattern lists, then use the spare strand to feel how the material responds before working on the finished object.
